Opinions also vary as to the need for antithyroid drug therapy prior to radioiodine administration. The author's policy is only to us antithyroid drugs to render patients euthyroid if they have some concomitant severe disease (such as heart failure), are markedly thyrotoxic, or are elderly. There is evidence that a higher dose of radioiodine is required to render a patient euthyroid after prior carbimazole treatment.
If the toxic symptoms of the patient are troublesome, these can be alleviated by administration of propranolol.
